Rooms in Gosport.

Gosport is where people who work around the Solent actually live. It sits on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour — close enough that the ferry crossing takes four minutes, far enough that your rent isn't paying for the postcode. For anyone building a career in aviation, engineering, defence or healthcare, it's hard to find a better base. And with £18m of government regeneration money going into the waterfront right now, it's a town on the way up rather than one coasting.

WORK

The jobs are already here.

Boeing runs Apache and Chinook maintenance out of Gosport under an £879m MoD contract — around 150 roles locally, with another 300 at StandardAero in Fleetlands. Solent Airport at Lee-on-Solent is the largest employment site in the area and an Enterprise Zone built specifically around aviation, aerospace engineering and advanced manufacturing, with a flying school on site and CEMAST — a college specialising in aerospace, marine and automotive engineering — right next door.

Add the MoD presence, the NHS across the harbour, air traffic control, a growing cyber and defence-tech cluster, and the retail and hospitality that comes with all of it, and this is a town with real career ladders, not just jobs.

GETTING AROUND

Four minutes across the water.

The Gosport Ferry runs every 15 minutes from 5:30am to midnight, 364 days a year, and better than 99% of crossings leave on time. It docks beside Portsmouth Harbour station, so you are straight onto the rail network or the Hard bus interchange without a change.

Commuter season tickets make it cheaper again. Driving the same journey means fourteen miles round the harbour — most people do not bother.

WHAT IS COMING

A town in the middle of a rebuild.

Gosport secured £18m of government regeneration funding for its historic waterfront. The Grade II-listed Rum Store at Royal Clarence Yard is under a £22m restoration that will bring nearly 7,000 sqm of mixed-use space and up to 200 jobs. The old bus station is becoming The People's Park, with five new bars, restaurants and shops opening from summer 2026. A further £5.88m is going into the waterfront itself — new walkways, a platform over the water, a redesigned gateway from the ferry.

Most of it lands between now and 2028. Which is a reasonable argument for being here already.
